Chocolate Sugar Cookie Bars

A little butter. A little frosting magic.

Soft cocoa sugar-cookie bars with a thin dark-chocolate finish.

The feature to preserve is the shaping: Press the thick dough evenly into a lined 9-inch square metal pan. Level the corners and center; do not spread it into a larger pan.

Before mixing, measure without packing the flour. Cocoa is an additional dry ingredient. This version replaces ¼ cup of flour with cocoa rather than adding it on top of the original flour amount.

Use the observable baking cues as well as the timer. Melt chocolate gently and spread a thin coat over the cooled slab. Let set about 30 minutes, then cut sixteen squares.
