Candy Cane Twist Sugar Cookies

A little butter. A little frosting magic.

Red-and-white twisted peppermint sugar cookies shaped into small candy canes, with a sparkling peppermint finish.

The feature to preserve is the shaping: For each cookie, roll one rounded teaspoon of red dough and one of plain dough into 4-inch ropes. Place side by side, twist gently, bend the top into a cane and place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.

Before mixing, measure without packing the flour. Very cold dough can crack during rolling. Let a small portion soften until bendable while keeping the rest refrigerated. Roll with gentle even pressure and join the ropes without stretching them thin.

Use the observable baking cues as well as the timer. Combine finely crushed peppermint candy with the topping sugar. Sprinkle onto the hot cookies immediately after baking, then cool completely.

Instructions

Mixing

  1. Make the doughBeat butter and dough sugar smooth. Mix in milk, extracts and egg. Whisk flour, baking powder and salt, then mix in until cohesive. Divide in half and tint one half red.

Thermal management

  1. Prepare for shapingWrap the red and plain dough separately and chill for at least 4 hours. Work with small portions when shaping; extra softening time may be needed after an overnight chill.

Shaping

  1. Shape the batchFor each cookie, roll one rounded teaspoon of red dough and one of plain dough into 4-inch ropes. Place side by side, twist gently, bend the top into a cane and place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.

Baking

  1. Bake to the right textureHeat a conventional oven to 375°F (191°C). Bake on the center rack for 9–12 minutes, until the edges are set and the centers have lost their wet shine. Keep the tops lightly colored. Use cool pans for later trays.

Storage & Make-Ahead

Keeping your cookies fresh
MethodHow longWhat to do
Room temperature3–4 daysCool completely and seal in an airtight container. Keep unfrosted cookies separate from moist or strongly flavored treats.
RefrigerationRaw dough: up to 2 daysCover raw dough tightly. Refrigerating plain baked cookies is unnecessary and can dry them; let chilled dough become workable before shaping.
Freeze rawUp to 2 monthsFreeze formed canes flat, then pack carefully. Bake from frozen with extra time as needed; curves are fragile.
Freeze bakedUp to 2 monthsFreeze fully cooled, plain cookies in a sealed container with parchment between layers.
Restore30–60 minutesThaw baked cookies in their closed container at room temperature. For a freshly warmed plain cookie, use a 300°F oven for 2–3 minutes; cool briefly before serving.

Notes

  • US measures are shown first; gram weights help avoid packed flour. Spice weights are approximate: use measuring spoons for small quantities. Egg weights exclude shells. Temperatures are for a conventional oven.
